AS-USU Representative Position Description and Application Form (USU Price and Castle Dale)

 

Position Summary

 

The position of AS-USU (Associated Students – Utah State University) Representative at Utah State University – Price (USU Price) and Castle Dale is responsible to represent the needs of Price and Castle Dale students to the USU Price administration and also to AS-USU members in Logan.  The overarching goal of the AS-USU Representative is to enhance the quality of student life at USU Price and Castle Dale in the following areas: activities, public relations, recruiting, service, and academics.

 

The AS-USU Representative must be a Bachelor's degree seeking student, and this position is an appointed position for one academic year (fall and spring semesters).  The AS-USU Representative position requires approximately 15 hours of work each week during fall and spring semesters (some work may be required during summer sessions).  To be considered for the AS-USU Representative applicants must turn a completed “Application Form – AS-USU Representative” to USU Price by Friday, 30 May 2008 at 5:00 pmApplicants should print off and fill out an application form.  Completed application forms can be 1) delivered to the USU Price Information Desk (Computer Business Building, Room 137, 155 E. 500 N., Price), 2) scanned and sent as an e-mail attachment to linda.smith@usu.edu, or 3) sent through the U.S. mail.   The USU Price mailing address follows: Utah State University – Price, 451 E. 400 N., PMB 5870, Price, UT 84501.  Mailed items must be postmarked by 30 May 2008 for consideration.

 

Tuition Waiver

 

The person appointed to the position of AS-USU Representative receives a full Tuition Waiver at USU Price or Castle Dale for fall and spring semesters.  The Waiver is for one academic year (fall and spring semesters only).

 

Qualifications

 

1)       The AS-USU Representative must be a full time (12-18 credit hours) Bachelor's degree seeking student at USU Price or Castle Dale for fall semester 2008 and spring semester 2009.

2)       The AS-USU Representative must have an institution and overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher.

3)       The AS-USU Representative must be in good standing with Utah State University.  Good standing is defined as not being on social or academic suspension or probation, and failure to remain in good standing will result in immediate removal from office.

4)       Spring semester waiver money will be suspended if the AS-USU Representative’s institution or overall GPA falls below 2.5 for fall semester or if the Representative does not fulfill her/his responsibilities at an acceptable level.

5)    The AS-USU Representative must have a valid driver's license.

 

Skills and Attributes

 

It is imperative that the AS-USU Representative be able to communicate with people from various backgrounds and cultures, and relate to, recognize, and assist individuals with their needs and concerns.  The Representative must have excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to act with tact and discretion.  The person in this position must be energetic, dynamic, motivated, responsible, and a problem solver.  The Representative must also be autonomous, hardworking, and must take initiative without direct supervision.

 

The AS-USU Representative must be able to brainstorm and collaborate well with students and other colleagues.  The Representative must be capable of successfully completing tasks and balancing multiple tasks at one time.  A sense of humor is an absolute must for the person in this position.  It is important that the AS-USU Representative be able to empower students to take responsibility for and accept the consequences of their decisions and actions.  The Representative also must be able to maintain confidentiality while working interdependently with students, staff, and faculty.  It is important that the AS-USU Representative be comfortable with on going assessment and change, and the Representative must see him or herself as an interregnal part of the USU team.  Finally the AS-USU Representative must be comfortable presenting in front of small or large groups of people.

 

Responsibilities

 

The AS-USU Representative reports to the Director of the USU Price Center and to AS-USU Leadership in Logan.  The AS-USU Representative is required to serve approximately 15 hours each week during fall and spring semesters (some work may be required during summer sessions).  The AS-USU Representative should spend time each week accomplishing the following items.

 

·          Chair, organize, and implement one large student activity each semester as well as one small student activity each month during the academic year.  Recruit other student volunteers to serve on a committee and assist the Representative with activities.

 

·          Develop and implement student meetings, focus groups, or other means of gathering information about student needs/wants at USU Price & Castle Dale.  Obtain feedback from USU Price and Castle Dale students about activities, public relations, recruiting, service, and academics.

 

·          Meet bi-weekly with the Director of the USU Price Center to discuss activity planning, budget appropriation, and student needs/wants.

 

·          Attend monthly meetings with other AS-USU Representatives via Internet Video Conferencing (IVC).  Occasionally the AS-USU Representative for Price and Castle Dale will travel to AS-USU meetings around the state (travel costs will be paid by USU Price).

 

·          Design and implement a system to inform students concerning AS-USU initiatives.  This will be a two way process: 1) gathering information from USU Price and Castle Dale students, and 2) informing USU Price and Castle Dale students about initiatives and decisions applicable to them.

 

·          Promote USU Price and Castle Dale at local high schools and community agencies.  The AS-USU Representative may be called upon to speak to individuals or community groups about events, activities, scholarships, or the need for distance education in the area.

 

·          Follow all policies and procedures outlined in the AS-USU Constitution (http://www.usu.edu/asusu/government/files/NewRestructureConstitution.pdf).  Learn and correctly follow all USU paperwork procedures.  This includes petty cash forms, Accounting Request forms, consultant forms, etc.  Ensure that all forms are properly filled out and signed BEFORE spending any USU money.  Take and pass the USU driver training, and follow USU driving policies and procedures when driving for USU business.

 

·          Recruit students to become the AS-USU Representative in the future.  Ideally the current Representative would recruit at least one person to take his/her place the next year.

 

·          Decide and maintain at least two (2) office hours a week throughout the academic year.  The Representative can use one of the USU Price or Castle Dale classrooms as a part time office.

 

·          Demonstrate proper fiscal and property responsibility.  Spend money wisely and prudently.

 

·          Other duties as assigned.
